Chincoteague: Man gored by bull in Virginia

A man sustained serious injuries Sunday night after being gored by a bull in the Spanish town of Chincoteague, Virginia.

Officials said the 26-year-old was dragged by the animal while corralling his own bull and gored in the chest. Officials added that he was alone when the incident occurred, the Associated Press reported. He later died of his injuries.

Local law enforcement said the man’s death is currently under investigation. Officials did not identify the man but added that he was from a nearby county.

Witnesses said the man had walked right up to the bull and the animal grabbed him.

“All of a sudden, the bull kind of moved and he started screaming ‘Get out of my way,’ and he was gored in the back,” John P. De Luca told WWBT-TV.

An air ambulance flew the man to a local hospital, where he later died.

On their Facebook page, the Chincoteague Historical Society thanked the man’s family for notifying their organization of the man’s death, calling him “an outgoing, fun-loving, optimistic guy.”

The victim was the fifth fatality in Virginia this year, the local sheriff’s office noted in a Facebook post. The Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Office wrote that three other “fatal-like” incidents were preventable.

According to ABC News, the local Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with additional information about the fatal incident to contact the office.
