At Least 1 Killed, 5 Seriously Injured After Train, Freight Train Collide in London

Multiple people were injured after a freight train and a passenger train collided in central London, British police said Thursday.

News reports said one person had died and five others were seriously injured.

Iain Hurley, an assistant superintendent with London’s transport police, said staff from London Ambulance Service were treating “a number of people who have been injured.” He said the trains were carrying commercial equipment, not passengers.

Some of the 300-carriage train had derailed, with many of its carriages ploughing through a London neighborhood.

“Clearly London is coming to a standstill,” a police spokesman said. “Some of the trains are trapped in their pits. The accident is causing severe disruption to the entire rail network.”

Police said it would take “several hours” to clear the wreckage and restore services.

Aerial footage from Sky News showed emergency crews with high-powered fan cannons used to blast passengers from wrecked cars.

Transport Minister Chris Grayling said he was “making sure that everything is possible to get the trains moving again.”

He said emergency services were still working at the site.

Amtrak said it was working with the National Transportation Safety Board to determine how the crash occurred.
